Stories From The Village/Blog

As we grow to serve more and more students and support the community they live in, some achievements and seemingly small moments stand out which remind us of the real progress we are seeing. An important project that involves the labor of the entire village, a small amount of regular income from a micro enterprise or a child sharing a story from a donated book with an illiterate parent.  At GCP, we know many of our supporters may not ever get to visit with the wonderful Talensi people. We offer these short stories to give a feel for everyday life in the village and the difference we are making.

Community School Library

The dry season in Northern Ghana is long. After the last harvest in October, the rains stop until the end of May or June. This leaves seven months waiting to plant crops again but also a time for building with adobe.  In December of 2016, a French nonprofit, Nubian Vault Association (NVA) partnered with local village nonprofit, Peal Deng, to begin construction of a school library.

Daniel Bangrey then organized church members and the local villages to volunteer their labor to make this key building a reality.

The land has been donated by the land chief for a community school in early 2016, but the community lacked funds to begin any construction.  NVA came in to teach local masons the traditional technique of adobe vault construction, used for centuries in the Sahelian regions of West Africa.

This building technique allows for sustainable, geographically compatible, low tech construction with materials from the earth, mud.

What is needed now to complete the library is: tile flooring, electricity (for lights and a fan), paint for walls, book shelves, study tables and benches, louver windows and a metal door.

Gwen Evans, the Peace Corps Volunteer in the community has just received 1200 textbooks from Rotary Club. They are in boxes awaiting the completion of the library.

Stay tuned for updates as to funds needed to help the Talensi people complete their library.
